When I go hiking, I can walk a day and a half on it (when used sparingly), and therefore only need to charge my phone in the evening on a camp you use dd with Linux, the disk should not be mounted. I think the maps are updated every 2 weeks or month or so, but I never really bothered to pay much attention to that. Maps are also free, and are taken from Open Streetmaps, as also a lot of other navigation devices do nowadays.
